eOne - Make It To The Moon
Radical Point Media invited me to work with them on the visual effects for the EOne documentary "Make It To The Moon". I was responsible for story-boarding multiple scenes, asset creation, the Apollo One command module fire scene, and a few of the space travel shots. We started the project without a script, only knowing that we would need to recreate the Apollo One tragedy in CGI. Thankfully when we received the edit with the holes for our VFX we were really close in shot design (which I created with Radical Point Media owner Kirk Hipkiss). After client approval on the boards, I used the actual accident investigation photos as reference to recreate the interior of the Apollo Block One.
My responsibilities for the fire scene shown above were story-boarding, environment modelling, texturing, lighting, FX, animation, rendering, and compositing. The astronaut suit was purchased but did require some texture alterations.
The show required quite a few space travel scenes so we sourced base models for the Saturn V, command module and the lunar lander. While the stock models got us on our way to the asset finish line, many parts needed to be remodeled and the surfacing had to be created from scratch on all. Researching for this project made me a bit of a space nerd so I jumped at the opportunity to model and surface the assets. When I was done the models were provided to the rest of the team for animation.
Most of my time on the project was spent on asset creation and the Apollo One tragedy scene but when all hands were on deck I got to create a few of the space travel scenes shown below. I was also responsible for the compositing.
Here are the storyboards we created blind without a script. Most of the boarded shots made it into the final. Concept to completion is my favorite way to work.
Below are a few of the style frames I created in the asset production phase.
If you have a VR headset and want to check out the scene in stereoscopic VR here is an image for you to use.
